The project. Background.

The project. Background.

Traditional treatments for water purification don`t solve dangerous contamination caused by specific pollutants, due to the difficulty to remove certain types of residue such as oils, greases and hydrocarbons, plus the toxicity thereof, makes strictly prohibited the spill of these materials in water as it can seriously affect the ecosystem. Because of this, it has been necessary to develop a pilot plant, in order to demonstrate that there are technologies based on elastomeric materials and biodegradation systems which can provide the necessary solution to water pollution.

The waste oils generated represent a 60 % of lubricants oils consumed. This make, that the waste oils are one of the most abundant pollutants waste 24 million tonnes / year. In the U.S.A about 7.6 million tonnes / year of lubricant are consumed, in Japan 2.2, in the European Union 4.7 and in Spain about 0.5, being the global demand of about 40 million tonnes / year. Waste oil is being removed by pouring into land and waterways without combustion or by indiscriminate use their potential value and producing dangerous contamination.

OBJECTIVES

OBJECTIVES

The main target of this project is to find a solution to existing environmental problems caused by water pollution by hydrocarbons, fats and oils. Which consists in developing a pilot plant capable of purifying polluted water with a flow rate of 5,000 dm3/h by allowing to remove 97-99% of pollutants and simultaneously capable of degrade or even eliminate them by microorganisms, so that these residues would be subsequently reused for a secondary use or even be eliminated. In this way, it could be possible to obtain high quality irrigation water and other uses as well, which currently require water in large quantities.

RESULTS
